8 Crucial Tips to Succeed in Live Poker Tournaments

Learning how to play and win live poker tournaments is easy, but if you want to take your game to a next level, you need some advanced strategies to beat top players in the game. Give below is the list of some proven strategies that will put you off to a flying start in the Texas Hold’em poker tourneys:

Play Tight in the Early Stages to Build Your Image

Your image is important in poker, but more so in online tournaments. If you are someone who steals a lot and plays too many hands in the early stage, your opponent will hardly let you to pick the uncontested pots later. Therefore, start playing tight initially and it will pay dividends later. Players will be less inclined to re-steal your opens and this will in return help you to add nicely to your stack.

Be Aggressor, Not the Caller with a Short/Medium Stack

Aggression is the key in online poker tournaments, especially when you are a medium or short stack. Calling raises when your stack is shallow is not a good idea, as it will often leave you with difficult decisions. Make sure you play good hands with the required aggression and pick most pots to chip up.

Adjust Opening Ranges as Per Tournament Stage

Some players overlook the importance of changing opening ranges in later stages of the live tournament, which is a bad idea. In the early stages, you can open with many playable hands, including small suited connectors or low pocket pairs, even from early positions. However, when the blinds get bigger, you have to change this strategy and should simply fold those hands. In the late stages, you should open with K9s instead 87s from early positions because your opponents will most probably have less strong combinations. So, play higher cards with blockers and reduce your opening size in a later stage.

Defend from Big Blind and Steal Blinds with Antes

One thing that does not change at any stage of the game is blind defense ranges. To have an edge over your opponents, you should be ready to defend even a weak hand. When you have antes in play, you should defend every good hand and still realize its equity, even out of the position. Talking about stealing blinds, you should start stealing chips especially if you have built your image in the early stage. Take the advantage of your tight image later and steal especially from tight or inexperienced players.

Take the Advantage of Money Bubble Stage

As the money bubble stage approaches, some players at the table become too passive and tight. Take the advantage of such players and steal chips from them. Attack short stacks by three-betting them, as they will do everything possible they can do to save themselves from busting on the money bubble.

Avoid Confrontation with Chip Leaders

If your opponent is the chip leader, don’t confront with him/her, as he or she will be playing back at you very aggressively trying to force you to fold your hand, knowing well that you probably will not risk your medium-size stack without a good hand. So, when you confront with a huge stack, try a bit of pot control and never overplay your medium or weak-strength hands, else you will probably lose a lot.

Change Your Strategy in ITM Stage

ITM is the stage when shorts stacks are often going all-in even with marginal hands to chip up back. Therefore, tightening your game is the best idea at that moment. If you have a medium stack at this stage, don’t waste your chips by playing marginal or weak hands and you will quickly move up.

Aim for 1stPlace at the Final Table

The lowest payouts at the final table mean a small proportion of the 1st place prize and this is the reason why should aim for the top position. Do not tighten up or passive, especially when you have some good holdings to win a pot. Be bold and aggressive and play every playable hand at this stage.

7 Golden Rules for Live Poker Beginners

7 Golden Rules for Live Poker Beginners

It is said that playing online is much comfortable than playing offline on a live table. Game’s rules and regulations are the same but the pace, accessibility, and playing environment make online playing different from offline poker. Although playing live is more challenging and intense than playing offline, poker players long to feel the fun and thrill involved in it and that is why the demand for dedicated casinos and live poker rooms in India is increasing gradually. Deltin Royale is a great example of growing popularity of live tables and card rooms among international players are well as local poker players in Goa.
Here are the golden poker rules for beginners which will help you succeed in a live poker game.

Read your opponents

It is necessary to pay attention to understand your opponent’s mind and gameplay. In a live poker game, a player must have the ability to identify the weakness and strengths of the opponents. You can predict their strategies by analyzing their playing pattern, the way they bet, eye contact, body language, posture, facial expressions (i.e. eyebrow twitches, hand gestures) etc. You can even guess the cards they are holding by implementing mathematical calculations and modify your gameplay accordingly.

Bankroll management

Bankroll is your exclusive money balance reserved for poker which helps you to play on real stake tables without the fear of getting broke. Practicing successful bankroll management is not as easy as it sounds. Newbies usually fail to plan and properly utilize their bankroll due to their lack of experience and understanding of variance. Your bankroll helps you to deal with variance and supports you financially at the time of frequent losses in the game.

Value of bluffing

What makes poker more interesting is that having the best hand cannot guarantee a winning on the table. You can win with much weaker cards than your opponents. Bluffing is psychological manipulation of the opponents to fold their better cards by believing you have a stronger hand than them. Bluffing is risky and its success depends on your position, your image on the table, skill set, experience of your opponents, etc.

Analyze your mistakes

Start analyzing your mistakes you made as soon as you start playing on a live table. The sooner, the better. Self-assessment is necessary to improve your gameplay and prevent yourself from making serious errors. Make it a habit to keep records of your game and try to not repeat the mistake again. Focus on your areas of improvement to make fewer mistakes on the gaming table and increase your winning possibilities.

Emotions

Showing any sudden emotions is embarrassing and can negatively affect your game. Everyone on the table can see your reaction and any sign of anxiety, annoyance, anger, or disinterest on your face or in your body language can give information about your cards. Also showing excitement and signs of happiness like cheering or smiling after getting dealt with good cards will help your opponent to guess your cards and lead you to lose the game. Learn to maintain your composure to think rationally and beat your opponents in the game.

Practice

Before taking a seat at a live poker event, learn the poker rules, regulations, and etiquette thoroughly. It’s a common assumption that learning poker is easy when you start playing on your own but it is also true that earning theoretical knowledge is equally important to eliminate the possibilities of confusion or doubts on the table. Play on online practice tables to earn necessary experience and skills which will eventually boost your confidence and help you take best decisions.

Cope With Defeat

Losing is a part of this game and even highly skilled players cannot win every game they play. Bad beats and downswings can shake your confidence and decision-making ability. It’s important to know when to continue, when to stop playing, and when to take a break from the game. Always play your natural game with a positive attitude to ensure long time sustainability in the poker world.

A Few Dos & Don’ts You Must Consider at Poker Table

A Few Dos & Don’ts You Must Consider at Poker Table

We have many people at the poker table who shout, boast, argue or berate other players. Then, there are many others who act out of their turn, hassle the dealer or over celebrate their wins. If that is the case, you don’t have manners or you just don’t care. If you do care to be nice at the offline poker table, here are some tips and points you need to ponder before you go on to play the game next time:

1) A Quick Look at Dos:

Be Professional
This is not a golf, but this is a game where you can make lots of money. It is not about the drinking and talking crazy for hours, it is an opportunity to look and act to win if you play poker for living. Give your 100% and take every moment seriously to win money and make a lucrative career in poker.

Be Polite to Everyone
It is okay to have a little chat, as some tables allow small talks. But it needs to be nice and friendly. The legendary Daniel Negreanu is widely known for his being nice, friendly and light chatter during games. This is a commendable trait to cultivate and is good for the spirit of the game. Some players lie about cards or offend or upset opponents in a lazy attempt, which a wrong attempt.

Be Social at the Table
Remember, offline poker is a social game. Keep your conversation as light and friendly as possible. Avoid talking about your bad beats. This is what newbie players do. Nobody at the table wants to hear your bad beat story. Also, don’t hit on women at the poker table, nobody wants the tension of your catcalls.

Reprimand Players Breaking Rules
When other poker players are talking about a hand or acting out of turn or breaking any table rules, it should be fine for you to calmly explain why what they are doing is wrong. If you don’t do this, others may join in and the whole culture at the table may get spoiled. So, reprimand those who break table rules.

2) A Quick Look at Don’ts:

Don’t Play Out of Your Turn
As the hand begins, the player on the left of the dealer posts small blind, the person to their left posts big blind, and betting goes on clockwise. Betting out of turn is a big sin in poker and ruins the flow of the game. It can even affect players strategies and decision. So, avoid acting out of your turn in poker.

Don’t Ask to See Mucked Cards
While the rule of poker game says that any poker player can ask to see a called hand, but it is a wrong etiquette to do so in poker, because lots of players might feel offensive. Ideally, if you are asking to see someone’s private cards, you are somehow calling them a cheat, which is a wrong approach.

Don’t Blame Dealer
The dealer is just to deal the cards. He or she doesn’t make the rules personally. Always keep in mind that dealers cannot change the outcome of the game. So if you get a bad beat, don’t blame or throw your tantrums on the dealer. Behave nicely and never make the life of a dealer difficult at the table.

Don’t Delay the Game
Thinking about the next hand play or watching out others to judge their moves is all okay, but delaying the game unnecessarily by ordering drinks, talking nonsense or being overly indecisive is not good for the spirit of the game.

Don’t Over-celebrate
Again, this is almost offensive, as the result of loss is frustrating to the other and so is over-celebrating. Nobody wants his lost money put on the show. Don’t dance or shout overly after taking down someone’s money. Instead, show some class and control both your negative and positive emotions.
